Putin and Patrushev Urge CIS Countries to Work Collectively; Comment About Peace Process Between Armenia and Azerbaijan
In a video message to the participants of the meeting of the secretaries of the CIS security councils on November 8, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that some countries are aimed at undermining the legitimate power in the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), this concerns traditional values and the situation in general.
"Global instability is projected onto Eurasia as well. Moreover, the actions of some countries are directly aimed at undermining legitimate power, social stability, and traditional values in the CIS countries, at disrupting our traditionally close trade, cooperation, and cultural ties," he said.
"All this requires not only a coordinated collective response but also a lot of preventive work. Among other things, it is important to make the fullest use of the forecasting, information, and analytical potential of the security councils for a deep and comprehensive study of the situation in the CIS space and in the world as a whole for a clear definition of priorities, timely adjustment of strategic planning documents," Putin pointed out.
Notably, on the eve, another boycott of the events under the auspices of the CIS and CSTO by the Armenian side became known. Armen Grigoryan, the Secretary of the Armenian Security Council, abstained from a working visit to the Russian capital to meet with his colleagues from the Commonwealth countries.
Moreover, Nikolai Patrushev, the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, said that the West has been able to undermine the international arms control regime also through the fault of the CIS countries, which do not have a unified position in some cases.
He stated that the politicized approaches of Washington, London, and Brussels have emasculated and devalued not only their activities but also the work of several UN bodies. Patrushev emphasized, "As a result, the international arms control regime has been undermined. This is largely due to the absence in some cases of a unified position of our countries on international platforms, the lack of mutual support."
Patrushev also touched upon the topic of settlement between Azerbaijan and Armenia. "We are interested in stabilizing the situation in the South Caucasus region, creating conditions for its development, and strengthening mutual trust and cooperation," the Russian Security Council secretary noted. According to him, Russia is consistently taking steps for the comprehensive normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations to conclude a peace treaty between these countries, delimit borders, and open transport communications. "Practice shows that this is possible only under the condition of non-interference of extra-regional forces. The actions of Western countries provoke the degradation of the situation in the region and contribute to the preservation of contradictions in it," he emphasized.
