Radical Religious Group Attacks Azerbaijani Embassy in UK

| News, Azerbaijan

On August 4, 2022, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the United Kingdom was attacked by a group of religious radicals. Entering the building of the embassy, the members of the vandal group raised religious flags and shouted radical religious slogans on the balcony of the building. After the intervention of the local police, the group members were taken out of the building and detained. Embassy employees were not injured as a result of the incident. Local law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident.

A radical group from Kuwait called "Servants of the Mehdi" claimed responsibility for the attack. It presents itself as a Shia group. The group was founded in London in 2008.

The Press Office of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry stated that in accordance with the Vienna Convention, a warning regarding the security of diplomats and diplomatic premises had been brought to the attention of UK authorities through diplomatic channels.

On August 5, the Charge d'Affaires of the UK Embassy in the Republic of Azerbaijan was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"A strong protest was expressed to the British Charge d'Affaires, who was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in connection with the attack by a radical religious group against the Azerbaijani embassy in London a day ago.

It was brought to the attention of the opposite side that this provocation seriously affects the issue of ensuring the security of the diplomatic mission and that the host country should take necessary security measures in accordance with its international legal obligations. A guarantee was requested from the opposite side that such situations will not be repeated," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry informed.

"Regarding the act of vandalism, the relevant institutions of the United Kingdom were required to conduct a thorough investigation and to bring the persons responsible to justice. The British Chargé d'Affaires expressed deep regret and concern about the incident. It was reported that the incident is under investigation," the statement added.

Moreover, on the day Azerbaijani Embassy was attacked, a telephone conversation was held between Jeyhun Bayramov and Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey.

During the telephone conversation, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey expressed his concern about the attack of a radical religious group on the building of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Minister Jeyhun Bayramov gave the Turkish side detailed information about this vandalism act. The Turkish Foreign Minister fully condemned this attack and pointed out that Türkiye stands by Azerbaijan and is always ready to support it. Minister Jeyhun Bayramov expressed his gratitude to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey for his attention and offered support.

Notably, some information about "The Mahdi Servants Union" (formerly known as Khoddam Al-Mahdi Organization (KMO)), which attacked the Azerbaijani Embassy in London, has come to light. It was known that it was led by the Kuwaiti cleric Yasir Al-Habib. The leader of the group is considered a radical rightist. He opposes the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and questions the religious authority of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. It is reported that the satellite TV channel "Fadak" belongs to Mehdi's Servants.

The organization's predecessor, Khoddam Al-Mahdi Organization, was founded on February 23, 2010, and was subsequently registered as a charity by the Charity Commission of England and Wales on July 21, 2010. The organization was headed by four British citizens - Adel Salah, Ali Shuber, Mohammad Salah, and Yaser Fovjyan. The charity was officially dissolved on April 10, 2012, but has since continued to collect donations and buy property under the name of charity. In 2013, the organization purchased the site of the former church for £1.2 million and established the Al-Muhasin Mosque in Fulmer, Buckinghamshire.

It should be noted that on March 10, 2018, members of the organization protested against the arrest of Hossein al-Shirazi, went to the balcony of the first floor of the Iranian embassy in London, replaced the Iranian flag with the flag of the group, and were arrested by the police.
