Recent Developments Regarding Farid Safarli Case in Iran
On August 1, Dilara Asgarova, Safarli's mother, said that she had spoken by phone with Farid Safarli, her son, an Azerbaijani citizen accused of espionage in Iran.
Asgarova added that Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs had not hired a lawyer for her son. "Farid spoke very tensely. The psychological pressures of the judge, the fact that he has not been provided with a lawyer, and the fact that no one from the Azerbaijani side is present at the court are very disturbing to him. Because I was upset from all sides, I gave some advice myself, for example, Farid does not understand the Persian written version of his statement, I instructed him to write under it, I don't understand, and so on," she wrote.
On August 2, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan reported, "From the day the information about Farid Safarli was received by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the fate and health of the citizen will be studied, Iran will clarify the issue, and the citizen's judicial and procedural rights will be investigated. Relevant work was done by both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate General of the country in the city of Tabriz to protect him and provide him with a lawyer."
"Regarding the issue, official appeals have been addressed to the Iranian side many times, and discussions have been held regularly. Farid Safarli's family and himself were contacted. Meetings were held with Farid Safarli by our Consulate General in Tabriz, and he was contacted by phone on an almost daily basis. Farid Safarli could communicate with his parents by phone. After repeated requests to the Iranian side regarding the organization of the protection of the rights of our citizens, in accordance with the Iranian legislation and the requirements of the court process, information about several lawyers from the other side was presented to the family of Farid Safarli by our Consulate General in Tabriz. It was stated that the involvement of a lawyer living in Azerbaijan in the process is not provided for in Iranian legislation. In addition, although a request was addressed to the Iranian side about the dates of the court sessions and the participation of the officials of our Consulate General in the sessions, these requests made by us were not answered by Iran, and it was not possible to participate in the court sessions. In addition, despite our appeals, the accused was not provided with an interpreter."
"At the same time, it was determined that during the court session held on July 19, the charge of 'espionage' brought against Farid Safarli was replaced by the charge of 'intention to spy.' Work is currently underway for Farid Safarli's parents to visit his son," Aykhan Hajizada, the head of the Press Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, said.
Notably, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received a request on March 9 regarding the fact that Farid Safarli, a citizen of Azerbaijan and a student at Jena University in Germany, went on a visit to Iran on February 20 but did not appear since March 4. It became known that Farid Safarli was arrested on espionage charges in Iran on June 1.
