| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

On April 7, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani said that Iran thinks that Azerbaijan’s actions against Iranian diplomats, who have been declared "persona non grata," run counter to the principles of good neighborly relations.

"We think that such conduct of the Azerbaijani government runs counter to the principles of good neighborly relations," he added. The Iranian diplomat called on Baku to demonstrate mutual respect, follow along the path of good neighborliness and stay away from the region's enemies, including "Israeli Zionists."

On April 8, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry reported that four employees of the Iranian Embassy in Azerbaijan were declared "persona non grata" due to their activities that did not correspond to diplomatic status and contradicted the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran Nasser Kanaani's comment dated April 7 is biased and emotional.

"Regarding the claim of the Iranian side that the measure taken by Azerbaijan is contrary to the principles of the neighborhood, we inform you that the illegal activity on the territory of Azerbaijan is not compatible with neighborly relations, and the steps taken in response are within the framework of the Vienna Convention," the report added.

"Islamic solidarity excludes the use of religion for political purposes, interference in the internal affairs of Muslim neighbors, and at the same time does not include support for the military occupation of the territories of another Muslim country. Azerbaijan has always established relations with its neighbors based on the principle of reciprocity and has never been interested in breaking these relations. Adequate measures taken by Azerbaijan have always been a response to provocative and provocative steps," it said.

After several hours, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry reported that on April 7 and 8, a telephone conversation took place between Jeyhun Bayramov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Huseyn Amir Abdollahian, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The parties mutually agreed to respect both countries' territorial integrity and sovereignty. During the telephone conversation, a detailed discussion was held regarding the existing dissatisfaction and misunderstandings between the two countries. The importance of continuing negotiations to eliminate misunderstandings was emphasized. The agreement was expressed on the implementation of existing projects between Azerbaijan and Iran.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov pointed out that it is essential to respect Azerbaijan's independent foreign policy based on its national interests and bilateral relations with the region's countries.

The ministers noted that it is important to continue mutual contacts.
