Russia Comments on Macron's Remarks About France's Involvement in Karabakh Issue and Situation Along Lachin Corridor

During a weekly briefing for journalists on July 6, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the statements of French President Emmanuel Macron about his role in the Karabakh settlement have not been backed up by any results.

"After such statements, one gets the impression that the modesty of President Macron is second only to his masculinity. Of course, we never cease to be surprised by these characteristics of the President of France. To the pathos with which he speaks about his role, merits in the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement, and on other issues too," Zakharova said.

"It is a pity that Macron did not say anything about the practical results of such fruitful work," the Russian diplomat added. "Perhaps he did not say because no one has ever seen these results," she suggested, pointing out that this also applies to many other cases Macron took. According to Zakharova, Moscow has long had no illusions about France's ability to contribute to solving complex problems related to Nagorno-Karabakh. "But self-promotion has not been canceled either. Perhaps this is the only thing they have left," the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry suggested.

Notably, the French president recently said, "I put more pressure on Aliyev than Pashinyan himself. The issue is Pashinyan. I am the only one with a clear position and message on the Karabakh issue."

Moreover, Zakharova said that Russia calls on Azerbaijan to unblock the Lachin corridor. "We express our extreme concern over the increasing cases of ceasefire violations in Nagorno-Karabakh and the ongoing blockade of the Lachin corridor. According to available information, the humanitarian situation in the region is deteriorating. With regret, we have to state that due to the cessation of supply, the population of Karabakh may find itself without stocks of food, essential goods, and medicines," Zakharova said. "This is contrary to the trilateral agreements between the leaders of Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, including the provisions of the statement of November 9, 2020," the Foreign Ministry stressed.

"We call on Baku and Yerevan to resolve all issues exclusively through political and diplomatic means. We call on the Azerbaijani side to unblock the Lachin corridor and ensure the unimpeded movement of citizens, vehicles, and cargo along it for civilian purposes," the diplomat said. "As for the actions of the Russian peacekeepers, they will correspond to the development of the situation on the ground, go in line with the agreements reached between the countries," the Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out.

"Russia maintains contacts with the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides to de-escalate the situation in the region. These contacts continue both at the political level and through the peacekeeping contingent," she added. "And, of course, much depends on the parties themselves, their political will, and readiness to meet each other halfway. For our part, we are making all the necessary efforts," Moscow assured.
