Russia Seeks Azerbaijan's Support to Open Consulate in Khankendi/Stepanakert

On May 27, Grigory Karasin, the Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, announced that Russia counts on Azerbaijan's support in the opening of the Russian Consulate General in Khankendi. Preparations for establishing the Russian Consulate General in Karabakh will commence soon.

During a meeting with a delegation from the Azerbaijani parliament, led by Samed Seyidov, the Chairman of the Committee on International Relations and Interparliamentary Ties, Karasin emphasized Moscow's reliance on Baku's assistance in this matter. "Regarding our bilateral issues, I would like to note the opening of the general consulate in Khankendi. We plan to start preparatory work for this in the near future and count on your support," Karasin stated.

Karasin suggested opening a Russian diplomatic mission in the Karabakh region within the year. He highlighted that this step would help address the disparity in mutual consular presence between the two countries.

Notably, the Russian peacekeepers have recently withdrawn from the Nagorno-Karabakh region. The Kremlin announced the beginning of the withdrawal of Russian peacekeeping forces from Nagorno-Karabakh on April 17, 2024. As a result of the withdrawal, Azerbaijan's Karabakh region came under Baku's complete control after Russia shut down its 2,000-strong military base.
