Russia to Open Consulate in Armenia's Syunik Region

According to a Russian news agency, Sergey Paltov, the deputy director of the 4th department of the CIS countries at the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated during an Armenian-Russian expert round table in Moscow that Russia has the intention to open a consulate in Armenia’s southern Syunik region.
The Russian diplomat further mentioned that instead of following the lengthy state procedures, which could take up to a year, a simplified approach would be pursued to open the consulate. He emphasized that it was decided to dispatch personnel to commence work on-site. The objective is for them to actively contribute to preserving Armenian-Russian friendship and enhancing the security of this strategically significant region in Armenia. Paltov also expressed hope that their visit in June would be effective.
According to the “Sputnik Armenia” news agency, the Armenian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the Armenian side responded positively to the proposal of opening a Russian consulate in Kapan city of the Syunik region.
However, no official statements have provided further details or explanations regarding this matter yet.
Earlier in 2022, Iran established a consulate in Kapan, a city in the southernmost Syunik province of Armenia, in what appeared to be a direct message to Azerbaijan and Turkey.
