Russian Intelligence Claims US Plot to Undermine Georgian Elections Via OSCE
A statement from the press bureau of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of Russia accuses the United States of having decided to "cooperate" with the leadership of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) of the OSCE to interfere in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia.
"According to information received by the SVR, the US State Department intends to use a new instrument of interference in the parliamentary elections in Georgia on October 26 of this year in order to prevent the victory of the ruling party "Georgian Dream," which is unfavorable to Washington, "- the press bureau reported. - The Americans have agreed to "cooperate" with the leadership of the OSCE ODIHR in the Georgian direction."
According to the SVR, "it is envisaged that the OSCE ODIHR will publish an interim report 10-20 days before the vote with a conclusion about the absence of conditions in the country for holding free and fair elections." "After the publication of the first results of the vote, a conclusion will be presented on the non-compliance of the electoral process with democratic norms," the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service press bureau indicated.
"Washington's plan is obvious and no longer surprising - to give the pro-Western Georgian opposition a pretext to launch mass protests to seize power in the country by force," the SVR noted.
"It is regrettable that the ODIHR, which, as stated on the official OSCE website, "is called upon to provide assistance" to the participating states of the organization in matters of observing human rights and fundamental freedoms, strengthening and protecting democratic institutions, and developing tolerance in society," the statement emphasized.
"We especially note the readiness of the Bureau to recognize it as "undemocratic" a priori, long before the vote. This indicates the final transformation of the ODIHR into a mouthpiece for the dishonest games of the American authorities. In the current situation, Russia's decision to reduce funding for the OSCE seems justified in order to at least somehow weaken the destructive activities of this once respected international structure," the SVR concluded.
