Russian Official Signals Support for Georgian Dream; US Warns of Russian Election Interference in Georgia

| News, Politics, Georgia

On July 21, Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Andrey Klimov implied that Russia was ready to assist the Georgian Dream in retaining power if Tbilisi sought Moscow's help.

A journalist asked Klimov if Russia was "ready to prevent a coup attempt in Georgia." Klimov responded by drawing a parallel with Syria, citing the example of Bashar al-Assad. He noted that those who turned to Russia received military assistance, saying, "Any coup d'état is an interference of external forces in the internal affairs of another state, which violates the UN Charter. Let me tell you something else: For example, there was an attempt to overthrow the state of Syria. When the legitimate government of Assad turned to us for military assistance, we provided them with this assistance, and, as you know, the situation in Syria stabilized," Klimov added.

Commenting on the prospects of Georgia joining the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Klimov stated, "This is, first of all, for Georgia to decide. To become a member of CSTO, one must first be willing to do so. The Collective Security Organization is an open system, and all countries ready to live by its rules should rely on this organization. Vladimir Putin's proposal is to have a common security system on the Eurasian continent. Georgia is a country on the Eurasian continent, and it can do this. There may be a desire for this; our other neighbors already have an understanding of this issue, India, China, and others; the main thing is not to be late."

US Warns of Russian Election Interference in Georgia, Urges Vigilance

At a briefing on July 22, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated, "We’ve seen a number of Russian not just attempts, but we’ve seen outright Russian interference in elections all throughout the region and all throughout the world, and we are always vigilant watching those."

He emphasized, "As you have heard us say on a number of occasions, it is important that Georgian people and Georgian people alone decide the future of their country."

Miller was responding to a journalist's question about the possibility of Moscow aiding the ruling Georgian Dream to remain in power, referencing a statement by a senior Russian official. With less than 100 days remaining before the crucial Georgian elections, the senior Russian official, when asked if Russia was "ready to prevent a coup attempt in Georgia," suggested that Moscow might assist the ruling Georgian Dream in staying in power.

He drew a parallel with Syria, stating, "When the legitimate government of Assad turned to us for military assistance, we provided them with this assistance, and, as you know, the situation in Syria has stabilized."
