Salome Zourabichvili Sends Open Letter to EU Foreign Ministers
On June 19, Salome Zourabichvili, the fifth President of Georgia, addressed an open letter to the Foreign Ministers of European Union member states, urging them to take a firmer stance toward the Georgian authorities regarding the country’s political course. Zourabichvili stated that EU representatives should "demand that the Georgian authorities release prisoners of conscience, abandon anti-European rhetoric, and repeal anti-European legislation," emphasizing that the current policies of the ruling leadership contradict the pro-European aspirations of the Georgian population.
Zourabichvili stated that the government’s political direction was "in stark contrast to the will of the Georgian people," arguing that the overwhelming majority of citizens continue to support European integration. She stated that instead of advancing the Euro-Atlantic path, the authorities were undermining cooperation with the European Union and called on EU foreign ministers ahead of the upcoming Foreign Affairs Council to reaffirm support for Georgia’s democratic and European aspirations.
In the letter, Zourabichvili also urged consideration of additional targeted measures, noting that previous restrictions had limited effect. At the same time, she cautioned against steps that could harm ordinary citizens, stressing that "the Georgian people should not be punished for the policies of the regime." She described visa-free travel with the EU as a key achievement of Georgia’s democratic reforms and warned that any suspension would not serve citizens’ interests but would instead strengthen the ruling authorities and those seeking to distance Georgia from the West, concluding that such an outcome "should not be allowed to succeed."
