Sargsyan: "The snap parliamentary election have not resolved any problems"

Former Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan's remarks that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is still unresolved, the peace agenda is being imposed on Armenia, and his party does not want a new war.

The statements made by former president and leader of former ruling Republican Party of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan at a congress "Republicans, Ongoing Reforms" held with support of Germany's Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Yerevan.

Sargsyan said that "as we have warned, the snap parliamentary election organised by the defeatist authorities in June, have not resolved any problem, any crisis, starting with security and ending with the system of values and starting from political and ending with the crisis of the judiciary."

Sargsyan added that being represented in parliament had never been a top goal for the party and that at the right time, if necessary, the party would be ready to continue its struggle exclusively outside parliament.

"It is unfair when the herald of war and the capitulator, who is the reason for the war, has not yet been punished by law for his adventurism and disastrous policy and has not deserved the malediction of our people that have not yet overcome the post-war shock," Sargsyan said.

Sargsyan flagged that it was unfair that the so-called peace agenda were being "dictated" to Armenia after thousands of lives had been taken and thousands of Armenians had been deprived of their homes following the aggression. He said that the injustice could not bring about internal stability and peace in the region.

Referring to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's recent statements, Sargsyan recalled how the latter behaved during his tenure and advised him to remember that "both you and your father have lost to the three former presidents of Armenia, both in war and diplomacy."

"You know it better than others that if it were not for the change of power in Armenia in 2018 with the big support of foreign powers, you would rather see your ears than Shushi (Susha) and Hadrut. The Nagorno-Karabakh issue is not resolved unless the issue of the status of Nagorno-Karabakh is clarified and so long as the security of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh is under serious threat every day, every hour," Sargsyan said.

Sargsyan said that his party was not a "party of war" and that they did not want war, since they had gone through all the Karabakh wars and they were ready to go for any sacrifice, but not to lead people to death because of stupid decisions and bloated arrogance.

"Capitulators have been feeding people with peace since 10 November (2020), while from that day until now, we continue to suffer losses - human, territorial, moral, and security losses. We are against a new war," Sargsyan said, pointing to a "shattered army, wasted weapons, and exhausted state institutions."

Sargsyan concluded that congress was devoted to the problems of continuous transformation of the Republican Party. He noted that from the very first day of its foundation, the activities of the Republican Party had been in line with the priorities of the state and that the party had always used its intellectual, human, and organisational potential to resist the challenges that the Armenian people faced. He said that the party had the same mission today and that it must be stronger, more up-to-date, and better organised.
