Separatist Abkhazia Criticizes Armenia
On July 4, the diplomatic service of the separatist regime of Abkhazia issued a statement criticizing Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan's recent statements in support of Georgia's territorial integrity during his visit to Tbilisi on July 3. The statement took issue with Armenia's favorable position on a UN resolution supporting the right of Georgian internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees to return to their homes in the territories considered occupied. It also urged Georgia to enter into a non-use of force agreement.
The statement from Sokhumi admonished Armenia for using what it described as "standard phrases about the mythical territorial integrity of Georgia", which it said contradicted "objective reality". It called Armenia's support for the UN resolution "alarming" and highlighted the involvement of the Armenian diaspora in Abkhazia, describing them as "prominent patriots" who have defended Abkhazia's "independence.
The statement also expressed hope that the Armenian leadership would soon reevaluate its position on the issue in light of current circumstances. In addition, it criticized the Georgian authorities for their repeated assertions of territorial integrity, which it described as "tiresome and declarative." It asserted that Georgian officials must recognize the political realities resulting from Georgia's military setbacks in 1992-1993 and called on Tbilisi to commit to a non-use of force treaty with the [de facto] Republic of Abkhazia.
