Separatist Abkhazia Criticizes Georgia’s Plan to Block Russian Flights to Sokhumi

On March 25, Abkhazia’s de facto foreign ministry responded to the Georgian Civil Aviation Agency’s statements regarding its intention to prevent regular flights of Russian airlines to Sokhumi Airport, criticizing the stance as counterproductive and urging Tbilisi to acknowledge existing regional realities.
The de facto foreign ministry referenced recent remarks by Georgian politicians about their readiness for constructive dialogue with Abkhazia and South Ossetia, particularly citing Georgian Dream party chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili’s statement that "Georgia will have to apologize to the Ossetian side for 2008 and punish the former ruling party." It emphasized that Abkhazia had expected the beginning of pragmatic engagement based on the recognition of the post-conflict situation in the South Caucasus. However, instead of adopting such a pragmatic approach, the Georgian authorities, it claimed, continue to make "formulaic, politically engaged, and detached-from-reality statements, which have already worn out their welcome and only create additional tension."
The so-called foreign ministry further stated that "the Georgian leadership’s latest outbursts are an attempt to obstruct processes that are irreversible" and argued that such rhetoric not only fails to contribute to resolving the prolonged crisis but also undermines the very possibility of dialogue by deepening mutual distrust. Sokhumi once again called on Tbilisi to abandon confrontational rhetoric, sign a legally binding agreement on the non-use of force, and "start a new stage of constructive dialogue, taking into account the political and legal realities formed after the conflicts of 1992-1993 and 2008."
