Sergey Naryshkin: "Armenian Elections Were Not Straightforward"
On June 15, Sergey Naryshkin, Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), stated that Moscow expects to preserve strong ties with Armenia and continue expanding bilateral cooperation across various sectors. According to Naryshkin, Russia is interested in maintaining positive relations with Yerevan and developing cooperation in the economic, humanitarian, military, and military-technical spheres. "For us—for Russia—it is important that good relations between the two countries be preserved and that cooperation and interaction develop across all areas," Naryshkin stated, expressing confidence that bilateral engagement would continue.
Commenting on Armenia’s foreign policy orientation, Naryshkin argued that relying exclusively on support from Western countries would be a mistake for the Armenian leadership. He emphasized that such an approach could lead to additional domestic challenges and create obstacles to the country’s economic development. "If the Armenian leadership relies solely on aid or support from the West, it will certainly be making a mistake, and the situation inside the country will become more complicated," Naryshkin stated. He added that such a course could generate further economic difficulties, while expressing hope that Armenia’s leadership would make what he described as sensible decisions.
Addressing Armenia’s internal political situation, Naryshkin described developments in the country as complex and characterized the results of the recent elections as "relative and, in a certain sense, questionable." "It is clear that the situation is difficult; the elections were not straightforward," Naryshkin stated. He added that dynamic political processes in Armenia are likely to continue in the period ahead.
