Seyran Ohanyan Loses Parliamentary Immunity
The parliamentary immunity of Seyran Ohanyan, the leader of the opposition Hayastan faction in Armenia, and the former Defense Minister of Armenia, was revoked. Chief Prosecutor Anna Vardapetyan presented the third criminal case against the leader of the Hayastan faction on February 8.
Anna Vardapetyan stated that the investigation of this criminal case also showed that Seyran Ohanyan sold the buildings belonging to the ministry at a low price when he was the Minister of Defense. According to the Chief Prosecutor, between April 14, 2008, and September 2008, Ohanyan used his official powers for the interests of the group.
The Prosecutor General said that during this period, two buildings in the Erebuni and Shengavit districts of Yerevan were sold to businessman Vahe Yakubyan, resulting in a loss of EUR 11.7 million to the state. "By buying the building for 5 billion 181 million 300 thousand drams [EUR 12 million], Vahe Yakubyan and other members paid only 12 percent of its market value," the statement added. It is reported that Serzh Sargsyan, the third president, was also interrogated in this case.
Seyran Ohanyan called the accusations against him false. He said that the government is making a fuss about the past to distract the society from today's problems.
