South Caucasus Leaders React to Trump’s Victory in U.S. Elections
On November 6, Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States, marking a historic comeback after his 2020 defeat and a series of political challenges. With a decisive win in Wisconsin, Trump secured the required 270 electoral votes, flipping Michigan and Pennsylvania back to Republican control. Vice President Kamala Harris called to concede, followed by President Joe Biden, who invited Trump to the White House to initiate the transition process.
Armenia
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan congratulated Trump on his election victory. "My warm congratulations on your impressive election as the 47th President of the United States. Mr. President-elect, I look forward to working with you to build bilateral strategic relations between Armenia and the United States, based on our shared values, priorities, and interests," Pashinyan wrote.
Azerbaijan
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev also extended his congratulations, noting that Trump’s victory reflects "a clear expression of the American people's great support and confidence in Donald Trump personally and in his political direction." Aliyev emphasized the significance of U.S.-Azerbaijan relations, recalling Trump’s first term as a period of strengthened cooperation, especially in counterterrorism, global security, and European energy security. "I would like to especially recognize your consistent support for Azerbaijan’s energy strategy," Aliyev stated.
Aliyev reaffirmed Azerbaijan's commitment to deepening its partnership with the United States across political, economic, security, energy, and digital domains. "We believe that during your new presidency, relations between Azerbaijan and the United States will further strengthen, with new areas of cooperation to be defined. Azerbaijan will continue its efforts to strengthen peace and security in the South Caucasus," he added, expressing confidence in advancing U.S.-Azerbaijan ties based on shared security interests.
Georgia
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze expressed optimism about renewed Georgian-American relations following Trump’s victory. "I congratulate President Donald Trump on his convincing victory in the elections. I am confident that President Trump’s leadership will promote peace globally and within our region, and provide an opportunity to reset U.S.-Georgia relations," Kobakhidze stated.
Similarly, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili promptly reached out to Trump, seeking support for European integration. "Congratulations on your election victory, Mr. President Trump. A strong America—our strategic partner and friend for over three decades—is needed now more than ever to support Euro-Atlantic integration, strengthen regional security and stability, and protect our freedom and independence," Zourabichvili emphasized.
