South Caucasus Reacts to US-Iran Peace Deal
On June 14–15, the United States and Iran reached a preliminary peace agreement aimed at ending months of conflict and stabilizing the wider Middle East. The deal is being described as a framework agreement / interim peace deal, rather than a fully finalized treaty, with a formal signing expected in Switzerland later this month. The agreement establishes an immediate cessation of hostilities between US and Iranian forces and outlines steps to reduce tensions in key flashpoints, including maritime security in the Gulf region.
On June 15, Nikol Pashinyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, welcomed the agreement reached between the United States and Iran, expressing hope that it would contribute to long-term peace in the Middle East. In a post published on X, Pashinyan praised the mediation efforts of several countries involved in the process, including Pakistan, Qatar, and Türkiye. "We welcome the agreement reached between the United States and Iran. We highly commend the mediation undertaken by Pakistan, Qatar, Turkiye and others," Pashinyan stated. He added that Yerevan hopes the development will help pave the way for "a comprehensive and lasting peace across the Middle East."
Azerbaijan also welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding announced between Washington and Tehran. In a statement, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the importance of the agreement and expressed appreciation for the mediation efforts that facilitated the negotiations. "We highly appreciate the important mediating role of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in the negotiation process, as well as other regional partners for their contributions," the ministry stated. Baku expressed hope that future negotiations based on the agreement would promote lasting peace and stability in the region.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister of Georgia, likewise welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran. In a statement published on X, Kobakhidze commended the diplomatic efforts that helped create the conditions for the agreement. "We commend the mediation efforts that contributed to creating the conditions necessary for this understanding to be achieved," Kobakhidze stated. He expressed hope that the development would lead to a comprehensive peace agreement and provide a durable resolution to the conflict.
