Recently, the Institute of Social Studies and Analysis (ISSA) conducted a public opinion poll from January 18 to 30, revealing widespread dissatisfaction with the country's direction, concerns over economic and political issues, and strong support for EU and NATO integration while also highlighting deep divisions regarding the Georgian Dream (GD) government and its policies.
According to the poll, 62% of respondents believed that Georgia was headed in the wrong direction, and 82.1% considered the country to be in a political crisis, with nearly 78% placing primary responsibility on the ruling GD party. High prices and unemployment were identified as the most pressing issues, followed by concerns over emigration, drug abuse, poverty, unfair parliamentary elections, crime, and insecurity.
Regarding Georgia's foreign policy, 67.1% of respondents disapproved of Irakli Kobakhidze's November 28 announcement to suspend the country's EU accession process until 2028. Nearly 55% believed that GD's foreign policy served the interests of Russia and its allies, such as China and Iran, while 30.1% saw it as balanced, and only 7% thought it aligned with Western Europe and the US. Additionally, 67% viewed the suspension of Georgia's strategic partnership with the US negatively. Despite this, 53% supported Georgia, remaining neutral and not joining any political or military alliance. Meanwhile, 86.3% backed EU integration, and 74.2% supported NATO membership.
Public opinion on domestic politics was divided. A majority (54.2%) found GD’s claims about anti-Georgian influences of the "Deep State" and the "Global War Party" unconvincing, while 25.3% remained undecided. Nearly 60% supported the ongoing protests, with 45% actively participating. Additionally, 62% backed the demand for new elections, and 76.3% supported the release of prisoners. The October 26 parliamentary elections were viewed as unfair by 43% of respondents, while 16% saw them as evenly balanced. More than half (51.3%) reported voting for opposition parties, while 32% voted for GD, and 17% declined to disclose their vote.
When asked about the legitimacy of the government, 48% considered the GD administration illegal or illegitimate, while 39.2% saw it as legal and legitimate. If new elections were held, 80% said they would participate, with GD’s support standing at 31.5% after allocation. Additionally, 55% disagreed with the notion that the risk of war with Russia would increase if GD lost power, while 35.5% saw it as a possibility, and 15.3% were certain of it.
In terms of political figures, President Salome Zourabichvili received the highest positive rating at 49%. Civil society organizations were rated positively by 36% and negatively by 30%. Since the October 26 elections, 38% viewed the opposition's performance negatively, while 33.2% assessed it positively. GD fared worse, with 53.2% expressing a negative opinion of its performance. Additionally, 57.2% disapproved of Mikheil Kavelashvili’s election as president.
Regarding US sanctions, up to 52% of respondents found sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili justified, with a similar number supporting sanctions against Interior Ministry officials.
TV channels and social media were cited as primary sources of information. The most-watched television networks included the pro-government Imedi (42%), opposition-leaning Mtavari (38%), and TV Pirveli (33.4%). Facebook was the most widely used social media platform.
The poll was conducted across Georgia through face-to-face interviews with 2,000 randomly selected respondents. The results have a margin of error of ±2.2% at the 95% confidence level.
