Tehran’s response to Baku over growing tension

| News, Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said that the military drill held northwest of Iran was a sovereignty issue and the Islamic Republic of Iran wouldn’t tolerate the presence of the "Israeli regime" near its borders.

Asked about the statements made by the Azerbaijan Republic President concerning Iran’s military exercise held in the northwest of the country, the spokesman said that the way the Azerbaijani President has expressed the remarks was surprising, as the two countries have good, respectful relations and enjoy normal paths of communication at the highest levels.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has always rejected any type of territorial occupation and emphasised the necessity of respecting the territorial integrity of countries and internationally recognised borders, Khatibzadeh went on to say.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran wouldn’t tolerate the presence of the Israeli regime, although exhibitive, near the borders of Iran and would do whatever it deems necessary for its security" Khatibzadeh declared.

On September 12, Azerbaijan set up a police and customs post on the border with Armenia, on the Goris-Kapan road passing through Azerbaijan, and began imposing customs duties on vehicles with Iranian license plates entering the country. Documents of drivers and cargo of Iranian state-registered vehicles were checked and two Iranian drivers transporting goods to Stepanakert/Khankendi were detained. Azerbaijan said they entered the country illegally.

This has strained relations between Tehran and Baku. Another source of tension is the start of military exercises by the Iranian army on the other side of the Araz, in the area from Aslanduz to Iranian Julfa, which is in front of the territories liberated by the Azerbaijani army along the border.

Amid tensions over the shipment of Iranian trucks to Karabakh via Armenia, Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev met with Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Seyed Abbas Mousavi twice in three days.

On September 27, President Ilham Aliyev said that this was not the first time that Iranian trucks had entered Karabakh illegally.

He stressed that although Azerbaijan was not aware of this at the moment, it had heard about it before and conveyed its dissatisfaction to Iran through various channels.

President Aliyev also said that after the war, Azerbaijan had the opportunity to monitor the Lachin corridor, the road to Khankendi/Stepanakert, Shusha and other areas with cameras, satellites, and drones, and it was determined that Iranian trucks travelled to the Karabakh after the war.

On September 29, an interesting event took place in Azerbaijan. During the commemoration ceremony, three women began to made speech against Azerbaijan and Israel. The State Security Service of Azerbaijan issued a statement on the same day saying the those individuals and others who shared biased information about Israel and Azerbaijan on social networks were summoned to the office of the State Security Service and preventive talks were held.

It should be noted that as these events continued, on September 29, the ambassadors of the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan to Iran also met.

In addition, it is alleged that Iran blocked the road to Nakhchivan and installed radio equipment in the area. In addition, Iran is stepping up operations after rising tensions.
