Tensions Flare Between Lukashenko and Pashinyan at SESC Meeting in St. Petersburg

During the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (SESC) in St. Petersburg on December 26, a tense exchange occurred between Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Lukashenko expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of some participants at the meeting, specifically referencing those who had not attended in person but had instead made statements through the media. Lukashenko suggested that if observers were truly interested in the union, they should attend the meetings rather than discuss cooperation on television. He also referred to Pashinyan’s appearance, joking about his physical changes, saying, "We perceive you as a new, young, outwardly at least, member of our union."

The disagreement escalated when Lukashenko proposed hosting the next SESC meeting in Minsk, combining it with the Eurasian Economic Forum, as stipulated by the statutory documents. He suggested holding the meeting in the second half of May 2025. Pashinyan, however, indicated that Armenia would participate via videoconference due to prior statements he had made. He clarified that while Armenia had no objections to the venue, they would attend remotely.

In response, Lukashenko questioned Pashinyan’s decision, asking, "What is your problem? Is it far to Minsk or is there no one to give you a ride?" He suggested that Belarus could organize transportation for the Armenian delegation if needed. Pashinyan replied firmly that his prior statement on the matter remained unchanged and did not require further discussion, to which Lukashenko responded, "We will consider your statement." Pashinyan then retorted, "You cannot consider my application because my application is not subject to consideration."

The exchange ended with a brief comment from Pashinyan, remarking, "I understand that maybe you have problems with TV sets as well, I am sympathetic to this," in reference to the remote participation format.
