Terrorism Prevention: Azerbaijan Detains Two Over Plot Against Cleric
On January 14, the State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan detained Georgian citizen Agil Goyja oglu Aslanov and Azerbaijani citizen Jeyhun Shahin oglu Ismayilov for planning a terrorist act against a member of a religious community operating in Azerbaijan.
According to the report, in September 2024, during a trip to a third country, Agil Aslanov, who was involved in drug smuggling, was introduced to special service employees of that country. They provided photographs and information about a member of a religious community in Azerbaijan and offered $200,000 for his assassination.
Following an agreement, Aslanov was initially tasked with gathering intelligence about the individual and his workplace, receiving an advance payment of $2,000. After arriving in Baku to execute the plan, Aslanov, with the help of Jeyhun Ismayilov, whom he had recruited for financial gain, collected and transmitted information about the individual’s residence and workplace to a foreign special service representative via a mobile phone application.
The court has ordered the arrest of Agil Aslanov and Jeyhun Ismayilov as a preventive measure under Articles 28, 214.2.1, 274, 276, and other provisions of the Criminal Code of the State Security Service.
According to media reports from Israel, Azerbaijan's State Security Service had foiled an Iranian-backed terror plot aimed at assassinating a prominent leader of the local Jewish community.
