The Georgian Government Refutes the Opposition’s Allegations Regarding the Sale of Military Information to Russia

| News, Georgia

On August 9, Elene Khoshtaria, the Head of the Droa party, responded to the Main Channel TV report on the fact that the paperwork of a Georgian soldier ended up in Russia by saying, "Our government distributes information about our heroes to our adversaries—this is treason." In Khoshtaria's opinion, this fact shows that the Georgian Dream and Russia are working together and that the ruling group is endangering the Georgian military.

"For years, we have had a number of well-founded suspicions that the special services of the Georgian Dream cooperated with the Russian special services. Over the years, no single spy has been identified. We had the case of Tristan Tsitlashvili when it was virtually confirmed that information about military facilities was transferred to Russia. We had the case of Gia Tsertsvadze when information about our military hero was also handed over to Russia. There have been several facts referring to this cooperation. We also see the attitude towards the Georgian soldiers fighting in Ukraine, towards the soldiers killed there, who are not honoured here. We often hear insulting statements in this battle. This attitude and what we saw yesterday are no longer suspicions, but facts," she added

Nika Melia, the head of the United National Movement, reacted furiously to the report that said the occupying authorities had complete access to the personal information of Mikheil Kamkhadze, a Georgian soldier serving in Ukraine. "The government is selling our motherland and our soldiers. This is no longer an allegation; this is a fact. We saw yesterday how the government provides personal files of Georgian soldiers to Russia, against whom they fought here in 2008 and are now fighting in Ukraine," he said. He claimed that this extremely troubling truth demonstrates the considerable Russian influence that exists inside Georgia's Ministry of Defense, which gives invaders access to any specific information about every Georgian individual and their families.

According to the Georgian Ministry of Defense, the accusations are false. "We would like to respond to the absurd and purposefully spread disinformation against the Ministry of Defence and the Defence Forces of Georgia, which is aimed at deceiving the public, discrediting government agencies, and promoting narrow partisan interests. The Main Channel aired a TV story claiming that the Ministry of Defence of Georgia allegedly sold the personal files of reserve officers to the special services of the Russian Federation. Later, the National Movement and its satellite parties, based on the mentioned disinformation, tried to earn political points. The said information is false and no part of it is true. After the dismissal of military servicemen from the defence forces, their personal files are not kept in material form in the structural units of the Ministry of Defence or Defence Forces of Georgia."
