Turkish Foreign Minister Slams Armenia's Monument to 'Nemesis' as Obstacle to Normalization

| News, Politics, Armenia

On the air of Lider Haber TV channel on May 8, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said that Turkey had taken some steps in the direction of normalizing relations with Armenia and supporting the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process, but Armenia has once again shown its insincerity by erecting a monument to the participants of the "Nemesis" operation in Yerevan.

"We told them that if you don't remove this monument, there will be no normalization, and we will take retaliatory measures," the official said. Çavuşoğlu once again called the opening of such a monument in Yerevan unacceptable for Turkey.

However, Yerevan stated that this monument was not erected by the government but by the municipality's decision. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey said he did not accept this explanation. "We have conveyed our necessary messages through our special representative and other channels. There is no question of going back on our decision. We are working on taking additional measures and will present them to the president," Çavuşoğlu stressed.

Moreover, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan also called the decision to erect this monument a mistake. He emphasized that the decision to erect the monument was made at the level of the Yerevan municipality: "The government did not take this decision, and one of the defects of democracy is that the government or the head of the government does not control everything and everyone, including our team. If you want to know my opinion, the right decision was not taken, and its implementation was not correct either." According to the Prime Minister, this happened in an atmosphere where many in Armenia consider many traitors and threaten to be shot for treason.
