
US Ambassador Highlights Progress in Security and Defense Dialogue with Armenia

On April 10, US Ambassador to Yerevan Kristina Kvien emphasized the active and substantive nature of discussions between the United States and Armenia regarding security and defense matters.
She highlighted the significant expansion of this dialogue over the past year. Ambassador Kvien recalled the first joint exercises between the United States and Armenia since 2008, held in September 2023. She regarded these exercises as a crucial indication of the potential for collaboration in the defense sector between the two nations. Additionally, Kvien mentioned plans to appoint a military advisor to engage with the Armenian Ministry of Defense, aiming to enhance Armenia's capacity in peacekeeping and other peace initiatives.
Acknowledging Armenia's interest in strengthening its involvement in peacekeeping efforts, Kvien expressed the US's commitment to supporting internal reforms within the Armenian Ministry of Defense to align with modern standards. Furthermore, she affirmed the US's intention to contribute to Armenia's peacekeeping endeavors and emphasized ongoing discussions on potential military assistance.
While addressing the question of arms and ammunition supply, Ambassador Kvien clarified that the current focus is on identifying Armenia's specific military needs through ongoing discussions. She highlighted Armenia's request for armored ambulances to transport individuals safely into conflict zones, indicating agreement on this matter and ongoing efforts to facilitate the provision of such assistance.
