US Announces US-Azerbaijan Strategic Working Group
On October 29, the US Department of State announced that the US-Azerbaijan Strategic Working Group would soon begin its activities to mark a new phase of bilateral cooperation. According to the department, the charter of the US-Azerbaijan Strategic Working Group would serve as the foundation for the first-ever strategic partnership between the United States and Azerbaijan, focusing on regional connectivity, economic investment, and security. The initiative aimed to deepen collaboration between the two countries and strengthen their long-term engagement.
The State Department emphasized that the US government intended to establish the first working groups with both Azerbaijan and Armenia by the end of the year. These efforts, it stated, would be guided by the joint declarations and memoranda of understanding signed in Washington on August 8. The department reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to implementing these agreements and advancing cooperation based on mutual understanding. The statement also praised the ongoing dialogue and recent practical steps between Baku and Yerevan, noting that the US closely monitored the meetings and the implementation of agreements between the two sides. It highlighted Washington’s welcome of "recent substantive discussions between representatives of Azerbaijan and Armenia on infrastructure development for border demarcation, mine clearance, and support for the TRIPP."
Furthermore, the department commended Azerbaijan’s decision to permit cargo transit through Armenia and the recent meeting of civil society representatives from both countries in Yerevan. The State Department concluded that these developments, combined with US-led initiatives, would help attract private investment and "usher in a new era of prosperity for Azerbaijan, Armenia, and beyond."
