US Applauds Georgia's Anti-Sanctions Circumvention Measures and Reform Commitments
During his speech at the German Marshall Fund event "Europe Whole and Free: Priorities for 2024" on January 25, James O’Brien, the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs at the US Department of State, emphasized Georgia's significance as a critical security partner for the Black Sea region. He highlighted the importance of Georgia's upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections, expressing strong support for international election observer missions and active engagement with Georgia's vibrant civil society to ensure the elections are conducted effectively.
O’Brien commended the Georgian government for its efforts to prevent sanctions circumvention, noting the country's commitment to reform measures, particularly in recent months. He acknowledged Georgia's role in safeguarding the Black Sea, which has become increasingly vital for global trade and economic activity, including the anticipated development of LNG connections and undersea cables.
In discussing global challenges and Euro-Atlantic relations, O’Brien addressed Russia’s war in Ukraine, technological advancements, and the EU membership prospects of candidate countries. He highlighted the importance of addressing the "grey space" between Russia and the US, emphasizing the need to change political incentives and support reforms in candidate countries seeking EU accession.
O'Brien welcomed the EU's decision to begin accession talks with nine countries and emphasized strong US support for these efforts. He emphasized the importance of leveraging available instruments to facilitate reforms and integrate candidate countries into the single market and the EU, promoting stability and prosperity in the region.
