US citizen expelled from Tskhinvali/South Ossetia for trespassing

| News, Georgia, Tskhinvali

In the Dzau region of separatist Tskhinvali/South Ossetia, local KGB officers detained and then expelled a US citizen who violated the state border to Georgia. The Georgian State Security Service confirmed his transfer.

In May, Power in Unity activists staged protests on the border with the breakaway region South Ossetia against the installation of warning signs and fences. The State Security Committee of the unrecognised republic warned that the activists are creating "prerequisites for the emergence of border incidents." The Georgian State Security Service called the installation of warning signs on the South Ossetian side of the demarcation line destructive.

On July 3, 2020, the Caucasian Knot together with the international human rights organisation Amnesty International published a report "Behind the barbed wire. Human rights violations as a result of borderisation in Georgia.” Restrictions on crossing the line of demarcation with so-called Abkhazia and South Ossetia violate the rights of residents of border villages who cannot manage their household and risk being detained, the report says.

Georgia and international community consider Abkhazia and Tskhinvali/South Ossetia to be Russian-occupied territories after Russia intervened in the armed conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia on August 8, 2008, and then recognised the independence of Tskhinvali/South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
