US-Georgia Relations: A New Chapter with Ambassador Robin Dunnigan?

| News, Politics, Georgia

On September 6, Chris Socha, the Counselor to the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, expressed hope that Robin Dunnigan, the new US Ambassador to Georgia, will be treated with respect in Georgia and not like outgoing Ambassador Kelly Degnan.

"The US has a long-standing relationship with Georgia, and we will remain committed to the aspirations of the Georgian people and the country as a whole. The problem is that we were very disappointed in the way Ambassador Degnan was treated. The personal attacks that were made against her, we believe, were disgusting and should not have happened. I hope that when Ambassador Dunnigan arrives, she will receive the true respect that should be accorded to the Ambassador of the United States. It should be noted that addressing the Ambassador has a significant impact on people in Washington and their impression of Georgia," Socha emphasized.

He also stated that there are also discussions about additional sanctions against businessman Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream. "The issue of sanctions is still a topic of discussion in Washington. When the administration imposed sanctions against Georgian judges, members of Congress welcomed it. Questions have arisen about what will happen next - will other judges be sanctioned? Will other entities from Georgia also be blacklisted, including Ivanishvili? The discussion is ongoing - we await the next steps from the administration. In Washington, this question remains open," Socha said.

Notably, Kelly Degnan repeatedly criticized the Georgian government and officials during her tenure. For this, Degnan was periodically criticized by Tbilisi and received support from the Georgian opposition.
