Venice Commission Visits Georgia to Review Judicial and Electoral Reforms

In a meeting between Shalva Papuashvili, the Georgian Parliament Speaker, and the visiting delegation of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe on November 16, reforms implemented in Georgia were discussed. 

"The meeting focused on the cooperation between the Georgian authorities and the body," the Parliament said. Papuashvili noted that the Georgian authorities highly appreciated the cooperation with the Venice Commission and the body's formal opinions on bills that helped bring Georgia closer to European standards.

Simona Granata-Menghini, a member of the visiting delegation, reviewed the process of the body preparing its opinions and procedures, which she said were based on active dialogue and exchanges. The officials also highlighted the importance of regular communication between the Georgian Government and the Commission at all stages of preparing and adopting related bills.

Moreover, judicial and electoral bills initiated in the Georgian Parliament were discussed = in a meeting between Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, and a visiting delegation of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. Kobakhidze said the Georgian authorities were cooperating intensively with the Venice Commission in comments on the meeting. "Bills are often sent from us to the Venice Commission. We receive opinions from them, and the rate of consideration of the recommendation is certainly high on the part of the Georgian Parliament. The cooperation will continue in this mode," he said.

Irakli Garibashvili also met a delegation of the Venice Commission on its official visit to the country, led by Simona Granata-Menghini, the General Secretary of the Venice Commission.

The Head of Government of Georgia expressed his gratitude to Simona Granata-Menghini for the constructive cooperation and the contribution made in the approximation of the legislation of Georgia with European standards, thereby noting that the Venice Commission plays a significant role in the consultations on the legislative and regulatory framework of the country, as well as in the consolidation of democratic institutions in Georgia.
