Armenia and Azerbaijan send humanitarian assistance to Beirut

| News, Armenia, Azerbaijan

Following the catastrophic explosion in Beirut, the Armenian government announced that it will send humanitarian aid in the form of medicine, medical equipment and food to Lebanon by a special flight.

Speaking to the media, Armenia’s High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs Zareh Sinanyan spoke on the issues of the Armenian diaspora in Beirut. “At the moment, it seems that the number of people who want to come to Armenia is really very large, but there is no objective, numerical calculation of [the exact number of] people, which makes our job a little more difficult,” he said. According to Sinanyan, there is the very real problem of the lack of Armenian citizenship or residency for a good number of ethnic Armenians who want to leave Lebanon.

Besides Armenia, Azerbaijan also declared its readiness to provide assistance to the explosion-thorn capital of Lebanon. The Azerbaijani government announced that it will send financial aid worth $1 million to Lebanon from the reserve fund envisaged in the 2020 state budget to help eliminate the consequences of the tragedy.

The neighbouring countries to the Caucasus (Russia, Iran and Turkey) also would provide aid to the people of Lebanon. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that “Iran is ready to deliver any humanitarian, medical and infrastructural help to Lebanon to assist it to handle the current situation.” The Iranian Red Crescent Society announced that it will set up a rapid deployment hospital and send a team of 22 medical staff to Lebanon. The shipment of humanitarian aid, which includes 2,000 food packages and weighs 9 tonnes, as well as medicine and medical supplies, has already been sent to Lebanon.

Turkey sent search and rescue teams along with emergency medical personnel to aid Lebanon in the aftermath of a devastating explosion.

Russia's emergency officials say the country will send five planeloads of aid to Beirut. Russia’s Ministry for Emergency Situations will send rescuers, medical workers, a makeshift hospital and a lab for coronavirus testing to Lebanon.

Other countries like Germany, France, Australia, UK and many more also sent their assistance to Lebanon.
