Abkhaz Leaders Talk Integration with Russia

Inal Ardzinba, the de-facto foreign minister of occupied Abkhazia, argued during Russia's Channel One program "Big Game" that it was crucial for the people of Abkhazia that the republic joins the Union State of Russia and Belarus.

Ardzinba mentioned that Abkhazian officials are keenly studying the construction and operation of the union state, particularly examining areas like customs and taxation. Additionally, military-technical cooperation is also under close scrutiny. "Respecting the sovereign equality of nations is essential, which is why we align with both Russia and Belarus," Ardzinba stated, referencing an earlier declaration by the de-facto leader of occupied Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania. Bzhania had previously indicated in Moscow that Abkhazia is prepared to be part of the Union State with Russia and Belarus.

Speaking about Minsk's potential recognition of Abkhazian independence, Ardzinba highlighted that preparatory actions are in motion. He argued that recognition doesn't just occur spontaneously, but it requires major work.

He also revealed that Abkhazian goods have already been sent to Belarus and that both entities are progressing on mutual projects. The possibility of developing a significant resort complex in Abkhazia's Ochamchire district with Belarus's assistance is also being discussed. Furthermore, a substantial delegation from Abkhazia is set to visit Belarus soon to explore multiple cooperative ventures.

Addressing security matters and speculations about establishing a permanent naval base in Ochamchire in connection with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Ardzinba clarified that comparing Abkhazia to Nagorno-Karabakh is inappropriate, especially given that Russia, the world's largest nation, recognizes Abkhazia's sovereignty. Regarding defense and technical collaboration with Russia, he underscored its centrality to security.
