Aliyev Highlights the Need for Cooperation in South Caucasus
Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, stated on 19th January at the Davos Forum's panel discussion on “Eurasia’s Middle Coridor: From Pathway to Highway”: "Unfortunately, Armenia has not responded to our offer of signing a peaceful agreement, which would be very simple and would be based on fundamental principles of international law. Commissioner Khan has hinted at the absence of Armenia here, by stating that there are two South Caucasus countries present, when in reality there are at least three. I know who he meant. But why is Armenia not here? Because Armenia has rejected our offer, together with Georgia, to start a trilateral format of cooperation. I highly value the efforts of my friend, Irakli Garibashvili, who organized the meeting of foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia, joined by the Georgian colleague. Our offer was to organize a meeting of the leaders in Georgia, since it has historically always been a place where all the neighbors meet. But Armenia is not ready for that. That is one of the potential risks. If the three South Caucasus countries join forces in the fields of energy, transportation, security, stability, and demilitarization of borders, the region will become much safer."
