Armed Incident in Baku Claims Lives of Three Police Officers and Civilian

| News, Security, Azerbaijan

On June 24, an armed incident in Baku resulted in the deaths of five people, including three police officers.

According to a joint statement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan and the Prosecutor General's Office, Rovshan Allahverdiyev, a multiple-time convict currently wanted by the authorities, resisted arrest with armed force when police attempted to detain him in the Shuvelan settlement of the Khazar district in Baku.

"He tried to evade by putting his family members in front of the police officers to prevent retaliatory measures. Using this situation, he fired a Lancaster hunting gun, killing three police officers and one civilian," the statement detailed.

The police ultimately neutralized Allahverdiyev. The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that Allahverdiyev used his wife and children as shields while firing at the police from behind them. Elshad Hajiyev, head of the Ministry's Press Service, explained, "Police officers did not use weapons at that time so that innocent people and children would not become victims. They sacrificed themselves. Then the police officers neutralized the criminal and killed him."
