Armenia-Azerbaijan Talks in Washington Postponed
On June 8, official Yerevan announced that Azerbaijan had postponed the upcoming talks between Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers.
The scheduled talks between Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan, set to commence on June 12 in Washington, have been postponed. According to a spokeswoman from the Armenian Foreign Ministry, the delay was made at the request of the Azerbaijani side.
A spokeswoman for the Armenian Foreign Ministry said the talks have been delayed “at the request of the Azerbaijani side.” She did not elaborate. “The public will be duly notified of the new dates of the meeting,” she added.
Earlier in the day, the Azerbaijani news agency Turan reported that the Washington talks between Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan had been postponed. Citing unnamed diplomatic sources, Turan attributed the postponement to a scheduling conflict and “logistical” issues.
“Regarding the exact date of the next round of talks, we don’t have any specific dates to announce at this time,” a State Department spokesperson said in written comments to RFE/RL’s Armenian Service.
Before the recent postponement of the Washington talks, Armenian and Azerbaijani high-level officials engaged in negotiations and meetings. The foreign ministers held four days of negotiations outside Washington about a month ago. Subsequently, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met with the European Union chief Charles Michel. Following these initial meetings, they had two more meetings in the following weeks, with plans for another meeting scheduled for July.
