Armenia Boosts UK Security Ties with New Military Attaché, Extends WMD Pact with US
During a Cabinet session on April 12, the Armenian government made the decision to appoint a military attaché to the embassy of Armenia in the UK.
The decision to appoint a military attaché to the Armenian embassy in the UK was based on the growing security cooperation between the two countries. This cooperation includes command training by UK officers, participation in international peacekeeping forces, and annual military and politico-military consultations. These efforts stem from a memorandum signed in 2004.
Armenia has extended its practice of appointing military attachés to other CSTO countries, with recent appointments made in Kyrgyzstan in January. Additionally, on February 15, the Armenian government replaced its representatives in NATO and OSCE with military attachés.
According to recent reports by the Hindustan Times, India plans to deploy a defense attaché to Yerevan for the first time. This decision follows India’s sale of weapons systems to Armenia.
During the same cabinet session, the Armenian government also approved the extension of its agreement with the US government aimed at countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Initially extended for seven years on May 15, 2009, the agreement’s term expired on November 25, 2016. However, it was extended once more, effective from November 25, 2016, until November 25, 2023. With the agreement set to expire, the government’s consent to extend it for another seven years aims to continue efforts to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
