Armenia Enhances Legal Ties with EU through Criminal Justice Agreement

On April 5, in Brussels, Ararat Mirzoyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, participated in the signing ceremony of the agreement "On cooperation between the competent authorities in the field of legal cooperation between the Republic of Armenia and the European Union in the field of criminal proceedings of the Republic of Armenia and the European Union Agency for Cooperation in the Field of Criminal Justice (Eurojust)".

The agreement was signed by EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders on behalf of the EU, and on behalf of Belgium, holding the Presidency of the EU Council, by Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium and Minister of Justice and the North Sea, Paul Van Tigchelt.

Before the official signing ceremony commenced, the signing officials delivered remarks, emphasizing Armenia's proactive role in initiating negotiations in 2021 and its status as the first signatory upon the successful conclusion of the talks.

Minister Mirzoyan expressed his gratitude to all involved parties, both within the EU institutions and Armenia, for their efforts in reaching this agreement. He highlighted Armenia's keen interest in signing the agreement from the outset and underscored the significance of this step in enhancing cooperation in justice, the rule of law, and combating transnational crimes between Armenia and the EU.

The Minister emphasized the existing cooperation between Armenia and Eurojust and Europol, noting that the agreement would further strengthen and institutionalize this collaboration. He highlighted the agreement's role in advancing the full implementation of the Armenia-EU Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement, as well as in facilitating the exchange of expertise and capacity building.

Mirzoyan outlined the agreement's importance in fostering sectoral collaboration between Armenian and EU competent authorities, facilitating mutual legal assistance, developing joint investigation strategies, and resolving jurisdictional issues. He also mentioned that several documents with Europol had already been signed, awaiting ratification by the Parliament.
