Armenia: Minsk Group's Continuation Depends on Peace Deal with Azerbaijan

Armenia believes that the decision on whether to continue the process under the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s (OSCE) Minsk Group should be considered “in the context of signing a peace treaty” with Azerbaijan, according to RFE/RL’s Armenian Service, citing the country’s Foreign Ministry.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev recently accused Armenia of refusing to jointly request the dissolution of the Minsk Group, which was established in 1992 to mediate a peaceful resolution to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Azerbaijan also demands that Armenia agree to dissolve the Minsk Group as a precondition for signing a peace treaty between the two South Caucasus nations.

In a written response to RFE/RL’s Armenian Service regarding Azerbaijan’s demand, Armenia’s Foreign Ministry stated that it may consider continuing the Minsk process within the framework of a comprehensive settlement of relations, with priority given to the signing of a peace treaty.

For over 30 years, the OSCE Minsk Group, co-chaired by the United States, France, and Russia, has sought a diplomatic solution to the long-standing conflict.
