Armenia, along with India and Mexico, has reportedly refused to support part of the Summit for Democracy declaration condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Yerevan explained its decision not to condemn the Russian aggression by the fact that the declaration says nothing about Azerbaijan's aggression against Armenia. By Azerbaijani aggression, Armenia refers to the border fighting in September 2022, which resulted in the deaths of more than 300 soldiers on both sides.

Notably, Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan delivered a speech at the second online Summit for Democracy held at the initiative of US President Joe Biden in an online format, Government Press Office reports. The second Summit for Democracy is being attended by leaders of more than 100 countries, members of civil society, and international democratic institutions.

Referring to improved standings in several international rankings, Pashinyan mentioned that notwithstanding regional and global challenges, Armenia persistently pursues a democratic reform agenda.

Armenian PM also referred to the humanitarian crisis resulting from the blockade of the Lachin corridor, hailing it as an attempt of ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. Meanwhile, Pashinyan reiterated Armenia’s commitment to the peace process with Azerbaijan.

Pashinyan extended gratitude to the US “and other democratic partners”, which helped to stop Azerbaijani attacks by “expressing their clear condemnation of the aggression against Armenia” in September of last year.”
