Armenia to Iran: US Partnership No Threat to Iranian Interests

| News, Politics, Armenia

Armenia has assured Iran that the recently signed US-Armenia agreement is not directed against Iranian-Armenian relations, Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani stated during a press conference on February 6.

Sobhani emphasized that Armenian authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining strong ties with Iran and have vowed not to take any steps that would harm Iranian-Armenian relations or Iran’s interests.

“There is a mutual understanding between the Armenian and Iranian authorities on this matter, and both parties are deeply aware that their bilateral relations are developing for the benefit of the peoples of both countries,” he said.

The ambassador highlighted that this mutual understanding allows both nations to effectively manage regional developments and further strengthen their relations.

Addressing broader geopolitical tensions, Sobhani stated that US pressure on Iran has had the opposite effect, reinforcing Iran’s policy of maximum resistance.

He added that despite US-imposed challenges, Iran and Armenia have consistently managed to strengthen their bilateral ties, demonstrating resilience against external pressures.

Iran Rejects “Zangezur Corridor,” Reaffirms Strong Alignment with Armenia

Iran is the only country in the region whose stance on the so-called “Zangezur Corridor” fully aligns with that of Armenia, Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani stated during the same press conference.

Sobhani emphasized that Iran views the corridor project as detrimental to both countries and has no disagreements with Armenia on the matter. Addressing Russia’s statements that it does not oppose the corridor logic, the ambassador made Iran’s position clear:

“We have clearly expressed our position to both Russia and other countries. We oppose the corridor logic, we are against any road under international control, and we reject anything that would lead to border changes.”

He dismissed claims that Iran has shifted its stance, reaffirming that this issue is directly tied to Iran’s national security and is not subject to negotiation.

“Some countries are trying to create suspicion by alleging that Iran has rolled back its position on this issue. This matter concerns our security. We remain firm on issues related to our national security.”

Sobhani concluded by stating that Iran’s position remains unchanged, prioritizing its national interests over external pressures and rejecting any proposals that would alter regional borders or sovereignty.

During the press conference, the Iranian Ambassador also reaffirmed that Iran firmly supports the territorial integrity of Armenia,

Sobhani emphasized that Tehran remains committed to lasting peace and stability in the region and reiterated Iran’s strong opposition to any attempts to alter international borders in the South Caucasus.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is categorically opposed to changing international borders, geopolitical shifts, and the use of force to resolve regional issues,” he stated.

He also dismissed false narratives and external attempts to create suspicion between Iran and Armenia, stressing that no threats or misinformation can undermine the two countries' strong relations and mutual trust.
