Armenia v. Azerbaijan Hearings Held at International Court of Justice
Hearings were held at the International Court of Justice with Armenia and Azerbaijan. The parties accuse each other of violating the Convention on the Prevention of Racial Discrimination.
On January 30, the Armenian side appeared before the UN Supreme Court in The Hague to take temporary measures. It accused Azerbaijan of blocking the Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting [the separatist] Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia. Lawyers from Armenia said that the blockade created by the Azerbaijani side cut off 120,000 ethnic Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh from the outside world and made it impossible for Armenians with critical illnesses to be transferred to Armenia for treatment. During the hearings, Armenia also claimed that after the protests started by Azerbaijani eco-activists on December 12, the delivery of food and other humanitarian aid to Nagorno-Karabakh was prevented due to the ongoing blockade.
Elnur Mammadov, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, speaking before the judges of the International Court of Justice, called Yerevan's claims that the Lachin corridor is closed and Armenians remain under blockade unfounded and said that the road connecting Karabakh and Armenia is under the control of Russian peacekeepers according to the tripartite declaration signed in November 2020.
On January 31, the International Court of Justice heard calls from official Baku to take temporary measures against Yerevan based on Azerbaijan's appeal. The Azerbaijani representative demanded that Armenia stop mining Azerbaijani territories and report the location of mines buried in previous years. Elnur Mammadov said that buried mines threaten the safe return of IDPs to Karabakh.
