Armenian Prime Minister Welcomes European Parliament Resolution on Closer EU-Armenia Relations
During a regular Cabinet meeting chaired by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on 14 March, the Armenian leader addressed the recent resolution adopted by the European Parliament on closer ties between the European Union and Armenia, as well as the need for a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Prime Minister Pashinyan underlined the importance of the resolution, which received overwhelming support with 504 votes in favour, 4 against and 32 abstentions. He stressed that the resolution underscores the European Parliament's unwavering support for Armenia's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence based on the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration. In addition, the resolution commends Armenia's progress in the areas of democracy, rule of law and anti-corruption efforts.
Pashinyan noted that the resolution refers to his statement made at the European Parliament on 17 October, in which he reaffirmed Armenia's readiness to pursue closer relations with the European Union, including a possible candidacy for EU membership.
The Prime Minister called for a public debate in Armenia on the resolution, seeing it as an opportunity for citizens, political parties, NGOs and society at large to express their views on the future direction of Armenia. He underlined the government's commitment to further deepening and developing Armenia-EU relations and expressed his gratitude for the resolution's recognition of Armenia's progress and sovereignty.
