Armenian-Russian Relations Under Scrutiny: Russian FM Voices Disappointment
At the III Antalya Diplomacy Forum on March 2, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced Azerbaijan's commitment to resolving issues outlined in the trilateral statement between Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Russia. Lavrov highlighted ongoing dialogues with Azerbaijani counterparts, who reaffirmed their dedication to addressing the stipulated issues within the agreement.
Regarding diplomatic initiatives, Lavrov mentioned a planned visit by the Russian Foreign Ministry's ambassador on special assignments to Baku and Yerevan. However, while Baku welcomed the visit, Armenian counterparts have yet to confirm it, indicating Armenia's stance toward Russia.
Lavrov reiterated Moscow's readiness to facilitate regional communication unblocking, border demarcation, and peace treaty preparations. He referenced Russia's appointment of an ambassador-at-large to assist in normalizing Azerbaijani-Armenian relations, emphasizing the importance of Yerevan's cooperation in regional diplomacy.
Responding to a question at the 3rd Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Lavrov addressed Armenia's accusations against the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and its subsequent decisions. He cited Armenia's rejection of a joint document for CSTO mission deployment on the Azerbaijani border, contrasting it with the acceptance of an EU mission without accusations against Azerbaijan.
Lavrov expressed Russia's regret over Armenia's deliberate shift toward deteriorating relations with Moscow. He characterized Armenia's actions as counterproductive and not reflective of ally behavior, urging Armenian leadership to reconsider its approach to bilateral relations.
