Armenia's Membership in CSTO Remains Unchanged, Says Kazakhstan
During a conversation with journalists on February 29, Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Roman Vasilenko asserted that despite Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's statements, Kazakhstan has not observed any legal measures regarding Armenia's withdrawal from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
"We see a statement on Armenia's de facto suspension of its participation in the CSTO. As far as I know, Armenia has not taken any legal action to suspend its membership in the CSTO. That is, de jure Armenia does not suspend its membership in the CSTO," the deputy foreign minister highlighted.
Vasilenko emphasized that Kazakh authorities are committed to fortifying the CSTO, which is important in safeguarding the country's security. "Currently, the representative of Kazakhstan is the Secretary General of the CSTO. Kazakhstan is working to strengthen this organization, which, in our opinion, is a very important organization in the field of security, has played, is playing, and will play an important role for the security of the Republic of Kazakhstan," he stressed.
As previously reported by Caucasus Watch, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan clarified that the 'freezing' of relations with the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) means Armenia lacks a president at the CSTO and abstains from high-level events. Pashinyan expressed concern over the CSTO's failure to address Armenia's queries about its zone of responsibility, which he deemed a threat to Armenia's security and territorial integrity. He warned of legally freezing Armenia's CSTO membership if the organization doesn't fulfill its obligations, emphasizing the necessity of resolving issues to prevent further action.
