Azerbaijan And Iran Exchange Diplomatic Protests Amid Media Campaigns and Religious Disputes

On January 24 and 25, the heads of diplomatic missions of Azerbaijan and Iran were summoned to the respective Foreign Ministries amid tensions between the two countries.
Azerbaijani Ambassador to Tehran, Ali Alizadeh, met with Mojtaba Damirchilou, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director General for Eurasia at the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on January 24. The meeting focused on positive developments in bilateral relations and the importance of implementing agreements and preserving ties. Damirchilou expressed concern over actions by certain circles in Azerbaijan, including alleged unethical treatment of Iranian students, which he said undermines bilateral relations. He demanded measures against such actions and emphasized the need for vigilance to prevent division and disrespect toward religious figures and scholars.
On January 25, Seyid Jafar Aghaei Maryan, the Chargé d'Affaires of the Iranian Embassy in Azerbaijan, was summoned to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Azerbaijani side protested the "open campaign" against Azerbaijan and its leadership in Iranian media outlets close to government circles. It was noted that after productive meetings during the 16th session of the State Commission on Economic, Trade, and Humanitarian Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Iran, the summoning of the Azerbaijani ambassador and the subsequent campaign in the Iranian press caused misunderstandings.
The Azerbaijani side also expressed discontent over insulting remarks made by Ardabil’s Friday Imam, Seyid Hasan Ameli, and the subsequent support for Ameli from other Iranian religious figures, including Qazvin's Friday Imam. It deemed these actions harmful to bilateral relations and called for measures to prevent them.
