Azerbaijan Demands Clarification on Armenia's Territorial Claims
During a panel discussion at the Third Diplomatic Forum in Antalya on March 1, Hikmet Hajiyev, the Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, highlighted Azerbaijan's expectation for clarifications from Armenia regarding legal and constitutional documents containing elements of "Miatsum" and other territorial claims.
Hajiyev stressed the necessity for a genuine commitment from Armenia to advance the interim agenda while remaining vigilant about potential new developments that could exacerbate geopolitical divisions. He emphasized the importance of demarcating borders between Azerbaijan and Armenia, underlining that peace concerns Baku and Yerevan directly rather than external capitals like Paris or Brussels.
Furthermore, Hajiyev underscored the significance of a peace treaty between the two countries, emphasizing that it should not be pursued merely for the sake of formality but must reflect genuine intent to achieve lasting peace.
Notably, the concept of Miatsum emerged during the late 1980s and early 1990s Karabakh movement, culminating in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War from 1992 to 1994. It reflected Armenian discontent over the predominantly Armenian-populated region remaining under Azerbaijan's jurisdiction.
