On 6 December, the Azerbaijani Minister of Defense Colonel General Zakir Hasanov  met with the newly appointed Ambassador of Qatar to Azerbaijan Faisal bin Abdullah Hamad Abdullah Al Henzab in order to discuss prospects of military cooperation between the two countries.

Hasanov highlighted during the meeting the efforts of leaders of the two countries in the development of the Azerbaijani-Qatari relations and noted the successful development of relations in the military sphere. The parties, noting the great potential for cooperation in the military field, and expressed an interest in developing this cooperation. The importance of mutual visits of servicemen, as well as the holding of Azerbaijani-Turkish-Qatari joint military exercises in terms of the development of military relations, was noted.

A few days earlier, the first round of political consultations between the two countries’ foreign ministries was held in Doha. The meeting was attended by Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Ramiz Hasanov and Qatar’s Foreign Minister Sultan bin Sad Al-Mureyhi. A number of issues on bilateral cooperation between the two countries were discussed during the meeting, including an exchange of views on the prospects for the cooperation development in various fields, including politics, economy, agriculture, tourism, science, education and culture.

The relations established between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the State of Qatar were established in 1994, and have been considerably developing especially since 2004, after the official visit of the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Qatar and the visit of Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalife Al- Thani to Azerbaijan in 2007. At the same time, the visit Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalife Al-Thani to Azerbaijan in March 2012 played an important role in widening of cooperation. A treaty on military cooperation was signed in 2008 which laid the foundation of bilateral relations in this field. Qatar also recognizes the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and the two countries support their initiatives in the international organizations.

On 20 April, the Deputy of Milli Majlis (Parliament of Azerbaijan) and Member of Regional Affairs Committee Kamran Bayramov stated that Qatar-Azerbaijan ties are strengthening with the passage of time on solid grounds of bilateral pacts. Despite the high level of political cooperation, the trade turnover between the two countries is not big. The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Qatar reached only $3.6 million in 2018. Almost the entire amount of trade turnover accounted for the export of Azerbaijani products to Qatar. Currently, Azerbaijan is mainly exporting food and agricultural products to Qatar.

In 2016, Joint Economic, Commercial and Technical Commission was established between the governments of Azerbaijan and Qatar. The first meeting of the Commission was held in Azerbaijan in January 2017, and the second one was held in Qatar in February 2019.
