Azerbaijan Welcomes PKK's Announcement to Disband, Calling It a Step Toward Peace

On May 12, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the announcement of the dissolution of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a designated terrorist organization, describing it as a significant step toward lasting peace and stability in the region.
In a statement posted on X, the ministry emphasized its expectation for swift, practical measures to follow this announcement to eliminate the remaining terrorist threat.
The ministry also praised Türkiye’s leadership for its consistent efforts to combat terrorism, maintain regional security, and promote stability, reaffirming Azerbaijan’s solidarity with its strategic partner.
Notably, the PKK announced its decision to disband and end its armed struggle after over four decades of conflict with Türkiye. This decision, made at a congress the previous week, could bolster Türkiye’s political and economic stability and ease tensions in neighboring Iraq and Syria, where Kurdish forces are allied with the United States. President Erdoğan called the decision an important step toward a terrorism-free Türkiye but emphasized that the process would be closely monitored to ensure commitments are upheld. Despite welcoming the announcement, Ankara acknowledges that securing peace will require a complex legal framework to disarm the PKK, which is classified as a terrorist group by Türkiye and its allies.
