Azerbaijani Parliament Disciplines MP for His Remarks in Controversial Interview

| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

On April 28, a meeting of the Disciplinary Commission of the Azerbaijani Parliament was held.

Eldar Ibrahimov, the chairman of the commission, who opened the meeting, said that based on the request of Sahiba Gafarova, the Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament, the opinion of the MP Vahid Ahmadov in his last interview would be discussed. The commission's chairman drew attention to the fact that today Azerbaijan is the country that chairs a prestigious international organization such as the Non-Aligned Movement under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. The opinions expressed by an experienced deputy like Vahid Ahmadov in that interview about the parliament of such a country are unacceptable.

At the meeting, commission members Nizami Safarov, Sattar Mohbaliyev, Nasib Mahamaliyev, Uzumi Mammadov, Afat Hasanova, Mader Musayev, secretary of the commission Nurlan Hasanov said that according to the legislation, the MP has the right to give an interview and this right cannot be restricted. "However, in his interview, the MP should not express opinions that are not by the rules of ethical behavior of the parliamentarian. The MP should think about the interests of the people and the state rather than his own image and should consider that the said opinions can be used against us by the forces that are hostile to our country," he added.

MP Vahid Ahmadov spoke at the meeting and explained his attitude to the issue.

At the end of the meeting, according to the commission's decision, a disciplinary measure was applied to MP Vahid Ahmadov on the grounds specified in the first paragraph of Article 45 of the Internal Regulations of the Azerbaijani Parliament.

As previously reported by Caucasus Watch, in an interview with oppositional Sanjag Internet TV, Azerbaijani MP Vahid Ahmadov criticized his colleagues for their behavior and the situation in the country. At the plenary session of the Azerbaijani Parliament on April 25, the MPs harshly criticized Ahmadov for his comments. It should be noted that the interview has already been viewed by more than 500,000 people on Mehman Huseynov's YouTube channel, 1.5 million on the TikTok channel, and more than 800,000 on his Instagram page.
