Azerbaijani State Television Employees Attacked in France

| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

On June 29, there was an attack on employees of Azerbaijani television in France. In this regard, Azerbaijan Television and Radio Programs (AzTV) issued a statement.

It said AzTV employees were attacked while filming in France, where street riots occurred the day before. "As a result, the correspondent and the cameraman received minor bodily injuries; the camera was taken from them and then broken. When the officers demanded the return of the camera, they were threatened with weapons," the statement said.

It is indicated that AzTV strongly condemns what happened and considers what happened not only pressure on Azerbaijani journalists but also on freedom of speech in general, on free journalistic activity.

"We demand from the law enforcement agencies of France an objective investigation of this incident, identification and punishment of those who committed an armed attack on journalists, as well as taking the necessary measures to compensate for the damage," the leadership of the Azerbaijani TV and radio broadcaster added.

On the same day, Turkish Communications Director Fahrettin Altun condemned the attack on the journalists’ crew of Azerbaijani Television, the country’s state-run broadcast, in France. "We have learned with sorrow that the employees of the official Azerbaijan state television AZTV were attacked while performing their duties in France," Altun said. "We strongly condemn this heinous attack on the freedom of the press and information, which reveals that Europe is losing altitude day by day in terms of the protection of human rights and freedoms," he stressed. Altun urged the French authorities to identify and bring to justice the attack's perpetrators quickly.
