Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz Field Emerges as Major European Gas Supplier, BP Report Reveals
On August 3, BP company (British Petroleum) released a report on the results of the first half of 2023. In the first half of 2023, gas was delivered from the Shah Deniz field to the markets of Azerbaijan (Azerkontrakt OJSC), Georgia (GOGC), Turkey (BOTAŞ), BTC for numerous facilities, and buyers in Europe.
The information stated that in the first six months of the year, a total of approximately 13 billion standard cubic meters of gas and more than 2 million tons (approximately 18 million barrels) of condensate were produced from the Shah Deniz field. BP reported that the production capacity of the existing Shah Deniz facilities is currently approximately 72.6 million standard cubic meters per day (approximately 26.5 billion per year). The information said that works are being continued within the framework of the Shah Deniz 2 project. "In total, 21 wells were drilled within the Shah Deniz 2 project. These include five wells on the north flank of the field, four wells on the west flank, four wells on the east-south flank, five wells on the west-south flank, and three wells on the east-north flank," the report added.
BP added that in the first half of 2023, approximately 1 billion 208 million dollars in operating costs and approximately 408 million dollars in capital costs were incurred for Shah Deniz activities. Most of these costs were related to the Shah Deniz 2 project. According to the report, in the first half of 2023, stable production from the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli field (ACG) was safely and reliably continued. "Total production from ACG for the first six months - Chirag (23,000), Central Azeri (98,000), West Azeri (91,000), East Azeri (61,000), Deepwater Guneshli (67,000) and West Chirag (35,000) platforms together – averaged 375,000 barrels per day, or a total of about 68 million barrels, or 9 million tons," it emphasized.
"In the first half of 2023, an average of 6 million cubic meters per day and a total of 1.1 billion cubic meters of natural gas were delivered from ACG to the state of Azerbaijan mainly from the Sangachal terminal, as well as through the facility at Neft Dashlari. The rest of the produced natural gas was re-injected into the collector in order to maintain the pressure," the document states.
